Psychological experiences of teenage parents attending a rural secondary school in Limpopo, South Africa: A qualitative study

Abstract

This study explored the lived experiences of teenage parents attending a rural school in Limpopo Province, South Africa, on the care and support received during pregnancy and the insights gained from these experiences. A qualitative design, in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 participants (15 teen mothers and three teen fathers), and data were analysed thematically. Findings revealed four themes: emotional and social impact, including shame, concealment, perceived failure, and distress such as hopelessness; peer and social influence, where pressure and the pursuit of acceptance contributed to early sexual relationships; stigma and judgment from teachers, peers, families, and the community, which heightened isolation; coping and resilience, with learners relying heavily on family, particularly mothers and extended relatives for childcare and emotional support, enabling them to remain in school. The study concludes that targeted interventions are needed to reduce stigma, strengthen psychosocial support, and build resilience among teenage parents in rural settings.
